Good intro to esp8266 microcontrollers
Note this is a -close- clone of the retired WeMos D1-R1. It is NOT and arduino! Easy to setup in the Arduino IDE with instructions here: https://github.com/esp8266/Arduino. Use the Board Type: LOLIN WEMOS D1 R1. Windows 10 21H1 installed a driver quickly. I had the NTPClient demo program working in just a few minutes! Remember this is a 3.3v board, most 5v arduino shields will not work even though they plug in.

difficult for beginners
finally found a site that could help me with the installing the ESP8266 software -https://randomnerdtutorials.com/how-to-install-esp8266-board-arduino-ide/

An ESP8266 dressed like an Arduino Uno
This board saves time when connecting to an ESP8266, all the work is done. It can be programmed from the Arduino IDE when the ESP8266 is added as an additional board under Preferences. Just search online and you can find advice on how to do it. I had success using the NodeMCU 1.0ESP-12E Module board selection and using 115200 baud on the serial connection. The native ESP8266 baud is 74880 if you want to see the boot message in serial monitor. The Generic ESP8266 board selection also worked on the Arduino IDE. Running a sensor and website on the board with no problem.

clone is junk!
This unit did not work from the get-go. The drivers are there but it will not communicate for downloading programs. Checked all the sites to see if I could learn anything, most said, get the real thing!
